The European Truck Challenge (ETC) has been designed to compare standard tractors from different manufacturers across the EU. The test is aimed to produce solid guidelines for truck buyers. The 2010 challenge consisted of tractors in the 440 hp range. The most fuel efficient vehicle was the winner. The three main criteria for the challenge were:

  • Vehicle costs (cost of operation),
    Fuel consumption,
    Repair costs apart from regular maintenance.

All fuel consumption measurements were performed using AIC measuring instruments that have measuring discrepancy of less than 1%.

  • The 2009 participants of the European Truck of the Year were:
    Iveco Stralis 450 SCR „Active Space" (2.100 nm / 450 hp);
    MAN TGX 18.440 SCR „XLX" cabin (2.100 nm / 440 hp);
    Mercedes-Benz Actros 1844 SCR „L (2.100 nm / 435 hp);
    Scania R 400 AGR „Highline" (2.100 nm / 400 hp);
    Volvo FH 420 SCR „Globetrotter" (2.100 nm / 420 hp)
    As per one of the competition rules all vehicles are within the 2.100 nm range.

The test included various types of roads and different loads in order get the best all round results for the vehicles' maneuverability and fuel consumption.

The routes:
Country Roads 33 % (62.0 km)
Highways with medium load 32 % (60.0 km)
Highways with heavy load 17 % (32.0 km)
Highways 18% (34.5 km)
